Charlottesville is an 1hr to 1.5 hr Northwest. It is the home of the University of Virginia and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Additionally there are great wineries in this area.
Fredericksburg is 1hr north of Richmond. There is a Civil War battlefield there. Great Antiquing.
Ashland is 30 minutes north of Richmond. Very small and charming town. Its claim to fame--- Secretariat's Birthplace.
Williamsburg is 45minute-1hr east of Richmond. Colonial Williamsburg is an immersive living history museum and is worth the visit if you have time.
Washington DC is about 2-3hrs away by car- 2hr by train.
